Top 5 questions parents have about Byte for teens

17 September 2020

Byte aligners can be a great option for teens- they’re practically invisible, allow you to eat anything you normally would, and are shockingly affordable. But alas, being a parent is tough, and so is the decision of how to handle your child’s orthodontics. We wanted to help you get a feel for Byte and share the top questions we get from parents just like you!

1. Does Byte work for kids, or teens?

Yes! Anyone over the age of 13, with all of their adult teeth, is a candidate for Byte. Granted, if they have a severe misalignment, you’ll want to consult an orthodontist to know if other treatments like braces may be required. If you aren’t sure if they are a mild, moderate or severe case, you can start by taking this short quiz

2. How many hours a day does my child need to wear the aligners?

In order for treatment to be effective, they need to wear them for at least 22 hours per day. This means removing them for eating and cleaning, but that’s about it. Special circumstances like sports or band practice may also be a time to remove them, but we recommend keeping them in as long as possible. The total treatment time will take longer if they are not great at maintaining the 22 hour minimum. If that sounds like too much, you may want to consider Byte At-Night which are designed to work when worn for at least 10 hours each night, instead of the all-day aligners.

3. What can my child eat with Byte?

Anything! Well, anything that they normally would or should be eating. A major drawback of traditional braces is that you need to steer clear of crunchy and sticky foods. But byte aligners are simply removed for eating, so there are no dietary restrictions at all. Plus, brushing and flossing are a breeze with Byte, so you can get on with life quickly after meals.

4. What happens if my teen loses an aligner?

It happens to the best of us. One careless lunch tray dump may be the end of the road for an aligner. Don’t worry, that doesn’t mean your Byte progress has to come to a halt. Get in touch with your Byte care advisor and they’ll help you order a replacement. Due to the complexity of making a customized replacement aligner, there is a fee associated with getting a replacement. But we will be rooting for you! We have tips and tricks to try and get your teen into a routine to help keep that aligner top of mind and out of the trashcan.

5. How will I know if my teen is actually wearing their aligners properly?

Teens may fib, but the aligners don’t lie! Each week, they’ll swap out the aligner to progress in treatment. If it’s time for a swap and the next aligner isn’t fitting, that’s a pretty good indicator that they aren’t keeping them in for the full 22 hours per day. It’s not the end of the world, but they really do need to try and hit that amount of time for effective treatment. We want you to see great results!  So hopefully a pep talk will get them back on track to wear them more often.

If you have more questions, we are here to answer them! The customer care team at Byte promises to be transparent about what you can expect with our clear aligners. Yes, we think they are great, but want to make sure they’ll be great for your teen as well.
