How to take your best impressions

23 March 2019

Your teeth are unique—just like you. Thats why we cant use generic models to create your aligners. We need to understand how your teeth sit in your mouth right now, so we can start shifting you to a better smile.

Dental impressions help us do just that. And you can do them at home in just a few steps.

Don't worry. Well be here to help if you get stuck. But we make the whole thing really easy. Itll be over before you know it.

Heres what to do.

Step 1: Brush and floss your teeth.

We are going to get up close and personal with your teeth during this process. We dont want food, plaque, or other bits and pieces to get in the way.

Pretend you're going to visit the dentist and scrub like you want to make a great first impression. When youre done, you're ready to get started.

Step 2: Put your gloves on.

Youre going to perform a medical procedure. Gowning up is part of the process. We give you special gloves inside your impression kit. Wear them from start to finish.

Step 3: Mix your putty.

Your putty isnt premixed. Youll take care of that yourself. Its fun. We promise.

Grab your phone. Set a timer for 30 seconds. This stuff hardens fast, so youll need to work quickly. When your timer goes off, youre done.

Heres how to do it:

  • Open a red container and a white one.

  • Dump the contents into your gloved hands.

  • Mash them together.

  • Eliminate the swirls.

When youre done, the putty in your hands will have a consistent sky-blue color.

Step 4: Roll up that putty.

Youre ready to load your putty into a dental tray. To do that, roll up the stuff into a 4-inch-long cylinder—thats about the length of a toilet paper roll. If estimating isnt your thing, dont worry. We provide a measuring device in your kit.

Pop that roll into your dental tray, and grab your phone again. Youll need it for the next step.

Step 5: Work that tray.

Here comes the fun part:

  • Open wide, and position your teeth in the middle of the putty in the tray.

  • Use your thumbs to push the tray onto your teeth. Feel the putty slide onto your gums and your teeth tap the bottom of the tray.

  • Pull your lips over the tray.

Why should you use your thumbs when you have exceptional tools (your teeth!) to push into your tray? Good question. You dont bite down evenly. When you grip with those pearly whites, your tooth placement is distorted by pressure. Never bite as you make impressions. Always use your thumbs.

Set your phone timer for 3.5 minutes, and wait for the magic.

Step 6: Distract yourself.
  • We know. Its not natural to encase your teeth with goo. As you wait:

  • Mentally recite all of the lyrics to your favorite song. Drake, anyone?

  • Focus on breathing in and out through your nose.

  • Wiggle your toes.

  • Pet your cat—if kitty isnt thrown off by your new look.

  • Color.

Dont wiggle your teeth or jiggle the tray. That ruins your impressions. Focus on something else, and the time will fly by.

Step 7: Let yourself drool.

A saliva-smeared smile is the goal here. Drool that runs out of your mouth doesn't run down your throat, and that means less gagging and choking.

Grab a towel and sop up. Its a super small sacrifice to make for that perfect smile. And no one will ever see it happen.

Step 8: Repeat.

Youll need two impressions of your top teeth and two impressions of your bottom teeth. Its built-in mistake protection. If one set isnt quite right, your dental team has another chance at perfection.

Thats it! Weve made this process as simple as possible, so you can get back to your hustle and we can get cracking on your new smile. What are you waiting for?‍
